I had thought that a CDROM drive on the same port would prevent UDMA  
mode as well, but Wander thinks otherwise. Now I *am* confused  
because your results would seem to bear out my initial impression.

Anyway, it's results that count, and if you are now running in UDMA5  
mode you should see an improvement.
