Did you leave your TV connected?  That error I seem to recall comes from 
having something else communicating with the port at the same time you 
are trying to connect to it.  At least that is what I saw the other day 
when I tried to run the channel scan script while the frontend was still 
up and showing live tv from firewire.  Shut down the front end, and that 
error went away.
