Google can be quite helpful in these situations: (linux remote control)

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hs=ZD2&hl=en&safe=off&c2coff=1&client=firefox
-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=linux+remote+control&btnG=Search&met
a=

Brings up at the top of the list:

http://www.lirc.org/

This is the software that you'll want to install.

Then you just need to do some googling on how to set it up: (lirc nova-t)

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hs=MYh&hl=en&safe=off&c2coff=1&client=firefox
-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=lirc+nova-t&btnG=Search&meta=

Which leads to the top hit of this:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV_Nova-T_PCI

Which is rather quite detailed.

This took me all of 60 seconds to do, including typing and copy and pasting
typing this message.
