 you should still be able to play xbox live with a softmod.  there's
softmods that will boot to the modded or non-modded box (for xbox live
play).   push the eject button -> non-modded.  power button -> modded.
maybe the Ndure mod?  i don't remember.  i put in a chip.  you're right
though, you do want to save games in the game save partition.
