Tivo gives you something like an hour long livetv buffer. If, while
you're watching liveTV on your Tivo, you want to actually record it, you
can hit the record button, and it will continue on recording the show as
you watch it. However, only what is left in the buffer will be
available as the start of the program. If you're watching a 2 hour
program, and 1:30 into you decide to hit the record button, you lose the
first 30 minutes because they're not longer in the buffer. This is NOT
how mythtv does it. Mythtv will save your entire program and keep
recording it whether it takes 1GB or 40. Just in case, after watching
39GB of it, you still haven't decided whether you want to record it or
not. This is all not supposed to be a problem but that would be
predicated on the fact that nothing is going to take that much space for
one program. One guy has found a case where that is a problem for him,
and he is getting chastised for it and has left the thread.
Sheesh, I don't use LiveTV, that's the end of it.

Makes a lot of sense to me.
