Q: Is the new Mac Mini the ultimate HD MythFrontend?
A: No.
-Myth is not designed to work with a 6 button remote. Good luck getting your
preferred remote to work with the mini.
-It's "whisper quiet, " not silent.
-The form factor is nice, but a frontend hardly needs to be _that_ small.
-It will probably do 1080i content in MythFrontend, but I wouldn't say it's
guaranteed. "1080i playback" and "shared video memory" are not features
often found in the same package.
-Speaking of 1080i, is it a sure thing that that modeline will even be
available?
-It costs $900.
That said, screw myth, I want one anyway. I wouldn't use MythFrontend on
it, though. I'd just share my recordings directory and make it available to
iTunes, then use "Fornt row with Bonjour" as my MythFrontend replacement.
I do all of my scheduling via MythWeb as it is, and I prefer iTunes over
MythMusic/MythVideo, iPhoto over MythGallery, Firefox over MythBrowser, and
DVD Player over MythDVD. Avoiding the hassle of LiveTV is a small price to
pay, in my mind, for the advantages of using those Apple programs instead of
the Myth versions.
Of course, I'm cheap, so I'll continue using the Myth versions under Linux
for the forseeable future.
