Well I found a .asoundrc file on the internet that has made digital
audio work well, and not just in passthrough mode!  It even seems to
do a good job of 44.1k -> 48k on my flac files.

If anyone needs a copy, let me know.  I believe it was from a mythtv
wiki somewhere.
