A small update for the archive.  I moved halfway across the country to
a completely different cable system and house and have the exact same
symptoms.  I can make beautiful QAM recordings as  long as no one is
watching anything at the time.  I think I can safely rule out any
signal problems and blame the hardware now.  I've been wanting a
dedicated backend anyway.
