Not only that, but heck, you can buy a Streamzap USB receiver and a
remote too for about $20, and it's well supported under LIRC. Unless you
are extremely poverty stricken or really really like to tinker with
cables and so forth (or have an ancient system that has no USB ports, in
which case you're poverty stricken :-), I doubt if it's worth the time
and trouble.
