In my experience, using two drives (master/slave) on a single PATA cable 
gets you throughput slightly less than using a single drive, provided 
the two drives are evenly matched.  The rule of thumb is that throughput 
will be less than that of the slower device.

Also, expect rebuilds to take forever.

Other than that, I run 4 PATA drives in a RAID-5 without any problems 
using 2 controllers.
