Minor update. I was able to get some TV sound via aplay /dev/audio1. It
sounded poor, but I'm on antenna. Any sound is a start. I attempted
/dev/audio1 as my sound setting with no luck. I've ensured that artsd
and esd are not running (although I see no difference, yet). I should
also note that I've tried both the recommended .asoundrc for this card:
# cat ~/.asoundrc
pcm.intel8x0 {
type hw
card 0
}
ctl.intel8x0 {
type hw
card 0
}
and other, more elaborate versions. Right now, I'm sticking with this.
Unfortunately, the FAQ's sound section addresses alsamixer in a manner
that doesn't make sense to me. In particular, the section:
*snip*
CAPTUR source - the analog source to be sent to the DSP. This should be
set to the input source from the tuner card to the sound card. In most
cases this is Line but this could also be Aux, CD, Mic, etc., depending
on how you connect the input cable. This source should be muted to
prevent patching through the analog sound. The volume of this source
will not affect the record level.
Capture mixer - this sets the level for the analog to digital recording.
While a volume of 100% is recommended for testing, distortion may occur.
Lowering this level to 75% to 85% may result in better audio quality.
"Capture" should be marked as the CAPTUR destination.
*/snip*
throws me. I don't see how to set a source / destination in alsamixer.
I can simply adjust vol and mute. man alsamixer is no help.

I feel like I'm close, but also on my last throws with this. I need to
figure it out in the next three weeks: I won't buy a Japanese plextor
for life in Japan if I can't get this working in the US.
