That's not what those flags are meant for.  You don't want to use them.  
If you do /and/ you read the output of the configure script, you'll see:

WARNING: --disable-frontend is only intended to aid porting.
WARNING: THIS WILL BREAK THINGS. You are on your own now.

or

WARNING: --disable-backend is only intended to aid porting.
WARNING: You are on your own now.


And we mean that about on your own, so make sure you tell us if you used 
them before sending any questions about why things don't work to the 
list.  ;)
