[mythtv-users] upgrading from ( FC4 + apt-get ) to FC5

Well, here's an idea. Don't upgrade. Upgrading isn't safe, at all. A MythTV
frontend has way to many integrated settings, i.e. even with the same
xorg.conf upgrading the nvidia driver changes the video output so things
aren't lined up anymore. Great.

In fact don't have up2date or yum update run. Ever. Only upgrade if the new
distro/kernel has features you need to something you want to do. In fact,
why have most services running. I shut down everything including sendmail.
The box powers on. Plays video. Powers off. I upgraded to FC5 so I didn't
have to deal with a custom kernel (which I needed for the HD card). That's
it.

Subject: [mythtv-users] upgrading from ( FC4 + apt-get ) to FC5

Hi,

sorry for re-posting this; somebody told me it's OT,
somebody else told me instead it's better to post this on-list.
I personally believe it's in-topic as I am using
apt-get after reading Jarod's guide for installing Myth :-)

Shortly, I'd like to know how to upgrade (upgrade,
not a fresh install) from FC4 to FC5 my mythboxes.
My mythboxes all use apt-get since earlier Jarod
instruction (that was at FC2 era).

I experienced terrible trouble when upgrading FC2 to FC3,
and then again from FC3 to FC4.

Now please tell me the exact steps to follow for upgrading
from FC4 to FC5 without troubles, having in mind I use apt-get.

What happened in previous FC2/3/4 attempts was,
all the packages that have "atrpms" in their name (for example,
but it's the same with other repositories, too), were NOT
upgraded by the installation CD, even if they were base packages,
so I ended with a system having hundreds of duplicated packages,
one from the CD, and one from the previous version of the system
which however had a more recent version.

Then, I run apt-get but it did _NOT_ fix the problem (I believe
it found the FC3 packages were the latest version and it didn't
replace them with the corresponding FC4 package).

So I got a system with all the FC4 packages from the CD
and all the FC3*atrpms*.rpm packages installed by apt-get
in the previous system, this happened on all the mythboxes,
in some cases apt-get won't run at all due to the duplicated names,
the -f option wouldn't be executed too, and I had
to remove manually hundreds of duplicated packages before having
all my boxes working again...

So please tell me the safe path to upgrade a FC4 system
that has lots of extra packages added by apt-get, to FC5...

thanks
Franco
