I'm not running lirc only using a keyboard for control at the
moment. Some one else suggested using native lirc support, but as far as
I can see I need a remote/ir receiver to do this? (there is no way to
push commands into it manually from a shell?).

So I'm stuck again, tried changing window managers and still have the
same problem, can anyone suggest alternatives? I really don't mind
getting my hands dirty, I'm a C/C++ programmer. But I could do with
someone telling which classes I should be looking at, i.e. those that
handle the userinterface in mythfrontend. And specifically where the
code for changing channels is.

Alternatively, if someone could offer advice on getting round the gdb
crashing problem, that would be good.

Cheers for trying to help everybody!
