I'm not sure what the XBox360 remote protocol is, but
it has been reported that it will not work with the
original XBox.
I use a universal remote control with my XBox (using
the Microsoft dongle), and it works well - use one of
the RCA remote codes (I don't remember which one, and
I don't have the remote with me, so I couldn't tell
you for sure). (In case you're wondering, the
Hauppauge remotes for the PVR-250 and 350 use RC-5 VCR
codes - I don't know about the Nova ones, but I would
assume they are similar.)
As for writing an lircd.conf, I would find one of the
pre-filled RCA ones (surely one must exist somewhere),
and use irw to determine which buttons work. Rename
them, and presto, instant lirc.
