What I've done is to not start the frontend automatically - instead,
I've bound the remote's power button to a script which checks whether
the frontend is running, and alternatively either starts it, or kills
it. This means the backend can halt itself when it's idle. lirc + irexec
are your friends here. Do I think this is ideal? No. I'd far prefer the
backend to consider frontends sitting at the main menu for extended
periods of time to be idle, or the frontend to disconnect under those
circumstances. But I've learned not to make suggestions, particularly on
the UI without a patch for the program.
