More problems than it's worth?

I don't think so.

You can't gauge how good a piece of software is by the content of mailing list/forum posts. Some of the postings on this list (and some of the forums) quite frankly have me banging my head on the desk at their stupidity.

The majority of people who use mythtv without problems lie low & you never hear from them, IMHO.

In all the time I've used mythtv I've not had any issues to speak of - nothing that took constant cuddling / praying / rebooting / ritual sacrifice to fix, like some people experience. I upgraded to 0.19 this time last week - all it took to get going was a little bit of tweaking, nothing serious. Before I upgraded a hard drive last month, I had > 6 months uptime on my backend, not unusual among users. Try saying that about MCE ;-)

As for the hardware outlay - try it out on some spare hardware if you have any lying around. Most of my system is built up from spare parts.
If you were to _fairly_ compare MythTV with any other PC-based PVR platform, you'll find it comes out on top if you negate the fact you have to know a little about Linux to get it all going. MCE & the likes can be a royal PITA just the same.

If I could give any advice to prospective users of MythTV - read the docs, read them again and again. Find some howto guides, figure out how they fit into the 'official' way of doing things, then read some more again. What I'm saying is, do some research and don't go rushing headlong into it. The next most important thing is to test your hardware & make sure it all works in Linux before installing mythtv. So many people could save themselves major headaches if they bothered to do that IMHO.

Regards,
Justin.
