I use either Thunderbird or Mutt (depending on what I'm using to connect to the
mail server), but the filtering of mailing-list messages from everything else
gets done on the server by procmail.

Most mailing lists include a Sender line in the header, so procmail is set up
to filter on that.  Here's the rule that sifts out messages from this list:

:0:
* ^Sender: mythtv-users-bounces at mythtv.org
$HOME/.maildir/.MythTV/

With that done, any IMAP client (Thunderbird, Mutt, or whatever) can access it.
 I'd think that if you're doing the filtering with your mail client, you could
filter on the same line.
