Silly me, I didn't think about modelines at all.  I may have been 
thinking somehow that I couldn't specify modelines for the TV out, but I 
think I'm totally wrong on that one.  I'll try and modify the modeline 
for the TV out then.  I don't have a starting default modeline, though, 
as my xorg.conf doesn't have anything but the resolution specified.  
This is probably in fact the root of all my problems though.  There must 
be some standard NTSC 640x480 60Hz interlaced modeline laying around 
somewhere I can try and use as a starting point though, let's see if 
google helps there.  Thanks for pointing in the right direction.
