[mythtv-users] Ever use VNC? I find it really useful.

VNC is great for a lot of things, I use it often to remotely debug problems
with my parents' computer. But, it's not the most efficient way of doing
many things. It is basically taking snapshots of your screen & sending
that over the network to the remote viewer ( it's quite a bit more optimized
than that, but in essence it's redrawing your desktop to the network viewer
).
Depending on what you want to do, there are more efficient methods. Most
people use MythWeb to do scheduling remotely. There used to be another web
app that allowed control of MythTV via a web interface. I don't think it
was maintained/updated along with MythTV, because I tried it once and it
didn't work.
In 0.19, a network service was added to MythTV, so a TCP network connection
can be made to the MythTV system, and MythTV can be controlled over that
session. This can enable all kinds of cool remote control options and
automation. Based on the original poster's description, it sounds like
this may be the direction he's looking. Hopefully some apps will come
along soon that take advantage of that network control capability..
Combining the network control, and one of the new breed of WiFi enabled
universal remotes could offer some great MythTV possibilities. Or, it
could turn a general purpose device, like the Nokia 770 web-pad, into a
MythTV remote.
