Thanks very much for the advice Phil, even though it didn't work for me.
When I repeatedly hit '+' I just get "audio track 1" (and no audio).  Too
bad, it would have been nice to salvage those recordings.

I think I've fixed it: I first tried manually reinstalling the same version
of ivtv I was using (to minimize the changes to a previously working
system), which didn't fix the problem (it immediately reappeared).  Then I
figured I didn't have anything to lose, so I upgraded to the current stable
version of ivtv (0.4.0) and fingers crossed, that seems to have fixed it!
(the install was very quick too, kudos to the developers behind the Gentoo
package).

I'll keep an eye on it, but hopefully it will keep working until 0.19 is
out, when I'm planning on doing a fresh install from scratch on newer
hardware.
