Could you send me your 1080i modelines.  I have a similar setup - a 4:3
tv that takes 480p or 1080i.  480p works great, 1080i hangs.

You should be able to use the w command in myth to change the scale of
the video to fill most of your screen.  I do that with the brain dead
feed from the local UPN and WB stations (4:3 sent out in a 16:9 stream).
