Since a hardware card is out of my price range, I'm left with the Linux
solutions. The big thing is the (up until very recently) lack of
ability to expand the RAID-5 array after building it. I'm not in a
position to add 3 disks at a time so I'd be more prone to adding one
which really isn't reliably possible under Linux software RAID. This
combined with the fact that I don't buy like drives in quantities means
that RAID-5 isn't very useful to me as I expand one drive at a time.
