Since a hardware card is out of my price range, I'm left with the Linux 
solutions.  The big thing is the (up until very recently) lack of 
ability to expand the RAID-5 array after building it.  I'm not in a 
position to add 3 disks at a time so I'd be more prone to adding one 
which really isn't reliably possible under Linux software RAID.  This 
combined with the fact that I don't buy like drives in quantities means 
that RAID-5 isn't very useful to me as I expand one drive at a time.
