My ~/.nvidia-settings-rc contains only:
0/TVOverScan[TV-0]=18

Then in my ~/.xinitrc I have

/usr/bin/nvidia-settings --load-config-only &

Typically, most TVs factory settings have the brightness and contrast 
turned wayyyyy too high. I turn that stuff way down to 30%.
I use Avia home theater DVD that includes test patterns to calibrate the 
TV set.
