What's your output from

# cat /proc/asound/devices

As I understand things, unless you use some fancy jiggery-pokery to
resample non-48kHz audio  (such as a 44.1kHz CD) your S/PDIF will not
play it. The highly detailed (yet very simple to configure asoundrc
file in the HOWTO) allows transparent resampling to take place. You
should only need to configure the correct device for your S/PDIF and
ensure it is enable in alsa-mixer.
