I just read through your list and had some questions.

 Enable ALSA

$ Mythfrontend
Utilities / Setup -> Setup -> General -> Next -> Next

    * Audio output device: change "/dev/dsp" to "ALSA:default"
    * Mixer Device: change "/dev/mixer" to "default"

What is the benefit of this?
My MB has onboard sound and I am just hooked up via computer speakers
(subwoofer, tweeters), not a full stereo system (with surround).

For your suggestions I would appreciate seeing maybe a onliner on why you
made the change. That way novice users (like myself) would have some idea
of the benefit, or may not have considered that situation.

Thanks,
Dave
