I've used both of them, and the Hauppauge is (for my purposes, anyway) superior
to the Plextor. The Plextor supports MPEG-4, which can be more
space-efficient, but (with the last driver I tried, anyway) it won't properly
capture interlaced video (which is 100% of analog TV). It insists on
deinterlacing everything before encoding, and I believe it does so with
something naive like blending fields. If it detected 3:2 pulldown and removed
that properly, that would actually be pretty cool...but it doesn't. Hauppauge
MPEG-2 compressors (whether PCI or USB) do proper interlaced encoding. If you
want to archive a recording, you can choose the appropriate deinterlacing
method when you edit and reencode the video.
