I just use the built-in mythtranscode. On my machine (Ubuntu64 on
Athlon64 3500+ Winchester running slowly at 1.0GHz) transcoding 1080i
HD down to 720x480 or so at 3300kbps takes about 2x real-time (2 hrs
to transcode a 1-hr recording); 720p HD takes about 3x real-time (same
transcoding parameters).
I haven't seen a need to play around with ffmpeg or transcocde.
