I don't know how it is under non-Linux system, I don't have any licenses
for such systems. I know for sure that it affects the whole system,
neither mplayer nor vlc nor mythtv play any sound.

As above, I dont know. But I double checked every output jack with any
settings I could change... I'm out of ideas...
