Thanks for the follow up!  I sent another email just now.  What you
proposed was my option "b" idea.  I felt option "a" would be to add
user "www-data", which Apache runs as, to group "cdrom", which owns
/dev/hdb (the target of /dev/dvd).

Weighing those, how do you feel?  Please answer the other thread
though.  I don't want to hijack this one.  I think that this solution
is one that should be easy to find on gossamer.
