Ah ha.  I found that if I uncheck the "Enable AC3 to SPDIF passthrough", 
the audio is fine for the analog channels and it's only in stereo for 
the the HD channels.  Any way of getting something suitable which would 
allow me to use the SPDIF without any mucking about to enable the AC3 
when watching HD recordings?
