How are you feeding it? Via VGA, component, DVI or (shudder) S-Video/ 
composite ?

I'm feeding a VGA output running 1024x768 directly to the VGA input  
of the TV, but not all TVs will accept that resolution.

I'm cheating by stretching to 16:9 aspect. I plan to get around to  
seeing if I can get X to simply output a native widescreen signal,  
but haven't got around to it, and all I do right now is SD so it  
would really be just a question of the scaling happening in the video  
card or in the TV.
