The current official VNC distribution (RealVNC) comes with both a
standalone X server (which runs alongside and totally separate to the
normal X server) and a plugin module for the normal X server which
adds the VNC functionality into the :0 desktop (and is therefore
automatically enabled when X is started, whether logged in or not).
