I have several 1TB raid5 arrays and a 2TB raid6 array in my department all using
linux software raid. On the system with raid6 I do notice while heavy writing the
cpu usage goes up to between 5 and 15% on a single processor opteron 246 system
(2GHz) with 4 GB of REG ECC PC3200 DDR ram. This system is a fileserver on a nearly
100% gigabit network and it has both a 2TB raid 6 and a 1TB raid 5 arrays using 10 x
250GB for the larger raid6 array and 5 x250 GB for the smaller radi5 array. We are
using gentoo linux and reiserfs for most of the filesystems with a single 2TB
partition on the larger array and a lvm on the smaller with 6 to 10 logival volumes
on the smaller array.
