[mythtv-users] PVR-150/500 and bttv?

The tveeprom module is responsible for reading and
interpreting the contents of the EEPROM (if there is
one) on the TV card.

So, it reads in a stream of bytes, figures out what
card it is, and then retrieves the settings.  As new
cards are released and supported, the signatures need
to be updated.
