Yes, and no.

The only thing to be aware of is that SATA drives appear under "s"
devices, PATA appear under "h".

Here's my "cat /proc/mdstat" and my "/usr/sbin/pvdisplay" output:

[me at slap bin]# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid0] [raid1] [raid5]
md1 : active raid5 sdd2[5] sdc2[4] sdb2[3] sda2[2] hdc2[1] hda2[0]
       243865600 blocks level 5, 256k chunk, algorithm 2 [6/6] [UUUUUU]

md2 : active raid5 sdd3[5] sdc3[4] sdb3[3] sda3[2] hdc3[1] hda3[0]
       243865600 blocks level 5, 256k chunk, algorithm 2 [6/6] [UUUUUU]

md3 : active raid5 sdd5[5] sdc5[4] sdb5[3] sda5[2] hdc5[1] hda5[0]
       243865600 blocks level 5, 256k chunk, algorithm 2 [6/6] [UUUUUU]

md4 : active raid5 sdd6[5] sdc6[4] sdb6[3] sda6[2] hdc6[1] hda6[0]
       243865600 blocks level 5, 256k chunk, algorithm 2 [6/6] [UUUUUU]

md5 : active raid0 sdd7[1] sdc7[0]
       97546240 blocks 256k chunks

md0 : active raid1 sdb1[3] sda1[2] hdc1[1] hda1[0]
       264960 blocks [4/4] [UUUU]

As you can see, I have a mixture of PATA and SATA devices, each
partitioned, partitions belonging to RAID 5 volumes, which are then LVMed.

Yes, seems overly complicated.
