I've got the same message in my dmesg, and my (MS) remote works fine.

I wonder if any video game stores in your area rent them?  That would be a
sure way to see if it's just your particular 3rd party brand or something.

As it stands, my frontend works perfectly with the torrent'd version (and
the few slight tweaks previously mentioned) except the LED control doesn't
seem to do anything at this point.  My home laptop is in for repairs right
now though, so my tinkering is hampered.
