[mythtv-users] Is gentoo the way to go?

Gentoo is good to learn about linux on it. I personally use it
exclusively, although I've spent a lot of time waiting for stuff to
compile at times. Of course it is possible to split compilation among
several pc's or compile your own binary versions for later use, but I
typically find it easiest just to wait and do something else..
That being said, Gentoo is not entirely for the faint of heart. For a
great many people installing some binary distribution quickly from an
ISO gets the job done, and with less fuss. Also the optimizations
possible on Gentoo usually don't make a huge difference in speed.
I've also found the knoppix dvd iso to be handy lately since I can
create virtual machines (vmware) for some testing by installing that,
and that gives me every tool I could possibly need installed fast.
In general if your going Gentoo, I tend to recommend having a separate
computer open to the gentoo home page and follow those directions
exactly, at least the first time. I personally find it handy to install
gentoo with a knoppix CD, since I can browse the web and everything
else while I install it. That doesn't work as well if you need to do a
64 bit install though since knoppix only boots into 32bit mode.
Additionally, you may find all kinds of fancy compiler options you can
add to make.conf. In general I highly suggest avoiding playing with the
compile options for at least a month or two, although you may need to
change some USE options. (You will want to select a stage 3 tarball
appropriate for your pc, that in itself will contain some decent
compiler options.)
I can't really give a comparison to what is the best myth platform since
I don't use any of the others enough to compare.
