Hi Loren - 
    I have a  Sound Blaster Live! 24 bit card as well and am
struggling with a similar issue as you.  For myself, not having a
master volume control is a major problem as the SPDIF output is
muffled and distorted.
    I've opened a bug with the ALSA developers to try to find out why
there are no master/PCM volume controls, but I haven't gotten an
update yet.
