It depends on the didtro.  I think FC3 is
FIRMWARE_DIR=/lib/firmware
and slackware is
FIRMWARE_DIR=/usr/lib/hotplug/firmware

Try slocate firmware.agent and then look in that file
for the FIRMWARE_DIR
