Thanks for the replies. I do feel a little sheepish that the answer was just 
a little further down in the guides, had I read a little further. 

One caution if you follow Jarod's instruction and upgrade ivtv, particularly 
if you have PVR-250's. After you upgrade ivtv, it no longer autodetects the 
PVR-250 and assumes it's a PVR-150. This was reported on the ivtv list. The 
workaround is to add "option ivtv cardtype=2" to modprobe.conf. I have two 
PVR-250's so I had to dig around a little more to find out I needed "option 
ivtv cardtype=2,2"
