Are you running on KDE ? I certainly needed to set the KDE sound system to 
yield control of sound after 5 secs of idle. 

Open the KDE control center and look at the sound page. There is a setting 
where you can have the KDE sound daemon yield after some period of 
inactivity.

I received the Myth error about not being able to do sound until I used this 
option.
