XvMC is XVideo-MotionCompensation, and yes it takes
some of the load off the CPU.  It may just be me, but
I have had problems getting XvMC to work correctly in
myth so I'm currently not using it.  In my case it
seems that if I use agpgart or NvAGP and XvMC the
system becomes unstable, hard lockups, screen
freezing, etc.
