Yes, on both counts.  You would actually want to connect the s-video 
output and the audio L/R to the inputs on the PVR-250.

There are some older Directv receivers with firewire, but I have no 
experience with them.  It could potentially be a better option.  
Wouldn't need to buy a PVR-250 and possibly wouldn't need to build a 
serial channel changer cable.   I wonder if we would get the Dolby 
Digital through the firewire.  Hmm, you are going to make me buy one of 
these and try it out aren't you...? ;-)
