Thanks, I'll give that a try.
I'm prepared to investigate this a bit if you are prepared to bear with
me 'cos I don't know much about perl ;)

One of the things I noticed about the ffmpeg sources from the Gentoo
package was that I couldn't find any support for mpeg2video as a codec.
It almost looked as if it was a cut down version of the one touted in
the documentation.

What I will do is download the non-Gentoo source for ffmpeg and compare
it and try to build it manually instead of using the Gentoo package and
see what pops up.

I know that my version from Gentoo (0.4.7) with all the required USE
flags set on, does not output mpeg2video using "ffmpeg -formats"
although it does list a lot of other options...
