I'd wager a guess the irman doesn't support RC5, but first, try shutting down 
lircd and fire up the program irrecord. See if you can get it to recognize 
any keypresses that way. If not, then probably no RC5 support.

I'd assume so, but I don't have either a DirecTV remote or an irman. :-)

I think DirecTV uses the other more popular IR protocol. Note that you'll have 
to hunt for an lircd.conf for that remote (could be one distributed w/lirc, 
not sure) or use irrecord to create your own.
