here's how to reset the password for root mysql user (written for
gentoo, others should be similar):

1.) stop mysql by running:
root at smeg / # /etc/init.d/mysql stop

2.) re-start mysql by running:
root at smeg / # mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &

3.) connect to mysql:
root at smeg / # mysql -u root

4.) update password (replace [new_password] with your password):
mysql> UPDATE user SET Password=PASSWORD('[new_password]') WHERE
User='root' AND Host='localhost';

5.) flush privileges tables:

6.) stop mysql:
root at smeg / # kill mysql

7.) re-start mysql as normal
root at smeg / # /etc/init.d/mysql start

good luck and remember that root password ;)
