You could try:
/usr/sbin/alsactl restore

According to Jarod's guide there's a problem with FC3 (I don't know
what distor your using) and this is his recommended solution (it's
placed in .kde/Autostart so is run each time kde starts, don't know
the equivelant for gnome)

Try it and see if it helps.
