Currently you will need to be running Myth CVS.  I will keep a patch for 
.17 once it is released.  Unless of course Isaac likes the patch and 
incorporates it.

Here is a little overview on how the daemon works:

The daemon opens a serial port to communicate with the LED box and a 
network socket to communicate with the backend.
Depending on the options passed queries are sent to the backend.  
Currently the queries are: QUERY_FREESPACE, QUERY_GUIDEDATATHROUGH, 
QUERY_NEWMESSAGES, and QUERY_RECORDER.  Not all of these queries 
currently exist in the backend.  As soon as I finish testing the current 
CVS and my patches I will send a patch to the dev list.
