Hi all who might have contemplated replying - I found the error. I used
the wrong msp3400 module, just as stated in the
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html
The problem was that I had actually replaced the stock msp3400 but
obviously with the wrong one. A little rpm'ing found the following

[mythtv at localhost ~]$ rpm -qal|grep msp3400
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.724_FC3/updates/drivers/media/video/msp3400-ivtv.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.667/kernel/drivers/media/video/msp3400.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.724_FC3/kernel/drivers/media/video/msp3400.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-1.724_FC3/updates/drivers/media/video/msp3400.ko

belonging to

[mythtv at localhost ~]$ rpm -qal|grep msp3400|xargs rpm -qf
ivtv-kmdl-2.6.9-1.724_FC3-0.2.0-60_rc3d.rhfc3.at
kernel-2.6.9-1.667
kernel-2.6.9-1.724_FC3
video4linux-kmdl-2.6.9-1.724_FC3-20041005_125709-53.rhfc3.at

So I seem to have used the video4linux version. After renaming that
module, copying the msp3400-ivtv.ko into msp3400.ko and reloading the
module the sound worked perfect !

A little unsure though because the HOWTO states that |modinfo msp3400 |
grep "parm: *standard" should return |"parm: standard int" but it
doesn't. The HOWTO needs possibly an update.

Cheers !
